Paris stands in a small valley on the banks of the winding River Seine. This beautiful river, dotted by 32 old and elegant bridges, was undoubtedly the reason for early settlement. A riverboat cruise along here, from which you will see many of the wonderful sights of Paris, is a must for any visitor, with its wealth of historic shoreline buildings.

The Eiffel Tower, Paris

The Eiffel Tower

Completed in 1889 to celebrate the centenary of the French revolution, the Eiffel Tower is certainly the single most distinguishable feature of Paris. Every year over 6 million people climb (or use the elevator) over 1800 feet to the top where they are rewarded with astonishing views over the whole of Paris.

The Louvre; probably the most famous and grandest museum in the world and quite unlike any other. Built in the 12th century and a museum since 1793 the Louvre offers much to its visitors including; the exhibitions, concerts, lectures, guided tours, workshops, films and extensive outside gardens. It is the home to some of the most famous works of art from history including The Venus De Milo and The Mona Lisa making The Louvre another 'must' on any Paris trip.

Arc de Triomphe; it was Napoleon who ordered the building of the Arc de Triomphe in the early 19th century. Completed in 1836, Napoleon never got to march his victorious troops up the Champs Elysees thanks to Wellington. The Arc however, is still a splendid monument, used since the end of the first world war as a place of remembrance for the soldiers lost, an eternal flame marking their sacrifice. Bastille day (14th July) the anniversary of the beginning of the French revolution is a good time to visit with celebrations and military parades around the Arc de Triomphe.

Notre Dame; completed in the 13th century, this gothic cathedral was made famous in the book by Victor Hugo. Having taken almost 180 years to construct it is truly a sight you won't forget.

Moulin Rouge; no trip to Paris would be complete without a visit to the famous dinner and show at the Moulin Rouge. The perfect way to end an evening, with fine French cuisine, champagne and of course the cancan.

More modern attractions can also be found in Paris such as the futuristic Pompidou Centre and of course Disneyland.

Getting There:

By Air; there are three main airports serving the Paris area; Paris Beauvais, Paris Orly and Paris Roissy Charles de Gaulle. All three are conveniently located and operate regular bus shuttle services into Paris.

By Road; French roads can be a little hectic compared to other European countries. The toll roads however offer a perfect way to get to Paris for small fees. Once in Paris driving conditions are much the same as you would expect for any capital city.
